Name

Dealing with Water - How to avoid a watery death?

Description

Discworld is a place with a great variety of landscapes and environments. In addition to the numerous towns and cities about the Disc, mountains, plains, forests, deserts, swamps, rivers, lakes and seas offer a wealth of areas to explore and creatures to encounter.

But beware! Some of these areas can be deadly for the new adventurer who hasn't yet advanced useful skills such as swimming or climbing. If you rush and misstep, you might find yourself plummeting off a cliff; if you "wade" into a river or lake or sea, you may quickly find yourself a ghost with your corpse and all its inventory at the bottom of the sea.

Explore carefully during your first days on Discworld and plan on learning a little swimming early before you travel. Get a few swimming skills before even thinking of going into the water. Pay attention to warning signs (they're usually there for a reason); consider taking carriages or asking other players for help to travel between towns and cities if you're not sure your skills are up to the trip - there are player run transportation clubs that may help you. Many players are quite willing to offer you warnings and scary stories (don't believe everything of course!) if you ask about the dangers in a new area. A little paranoia is healthy for you.

If you do find you've just stepped into a dangerous area, try entering the "backward" command to quickly step back to where you were. If you find yourself immersed in a lake or river, go ahead and remove and drop your heaviest items (this often includes money!), and you might just find yourself staying afloat and alive, or at least being able to go "up". If you keep having problems, "remove all" and "drop all". It should be easier for you to retrieve your inventory and get help if you keep your body about you!
