Name
Weapons and Armour - Getting ready to fight.
Armour
Similar to clothes, armour can provide the wearer with warming and cooling, although it weighs considerably more. This extra weight will contribute to your burdening (see "score burden" to check). A higher burden can make it more difficult to do tasks like dodging or climbing, and very heavy burden will even give you a dexterity penalty.
For many adventurers just starting out on their travels, armour is literally a life or death decision. Each piece of armour will vary in its weight, the parts of your body it protects (as shown with the "coverage" command) and its effectiveness against different types of attacks.
If you have some skills, you can learn the "vurdere" command, which you can use to evaluate a piece of armour, or compare it to another.
Armour does get damaged, and depending on the type of armour, it may need mending with a needle, leatherworking in a tannery, or fixing in a smithy.
Weapons
While it is perfectly feasible not to take part in any combat whatsoever, or only do so unarmed, acquiring a weapon is very much a top priority for most.
There are no restrictions on the type of weapon you can use. However, as your character develops, your weapon choice may have a larger impact. A heavy weapon may not be so attractive to a wizard that has rearranged to have a low strength statistic, whilst a warrior may not favour the lightness of the dagger if arranged with more strength than dexterity.
All weapons fall into one of the following categories: polearm, sword, heavy-sword, dagger, flail, axe, mace and miscellaneous (misc).
You can tell what category a weapon falls into with the "appraise" command. Also, once learned and with the appropriate skills, you will be able to judge (see "help judge") the effectiveness of a weapon and what special offensive techniques (like slice or bash) it can perform.
Some weapons may be better than others, but in general you need the skills to match them. If you buy the most awesome sword in game, you may find it a lot more difficult to actually stick it through someone than with a simple rapier, say.
