NPC Interaction

Name

Non-Player Characters - Who are they and what do they do?

Description

Apart from players, there are many NPCs (Non-Player Characters) that populate a MUD. These are also known as "mobs" (or mobiles), "denizens", etc.

While some of them seem to exist for the main purpose of you putting a sword through them, you can interact with them, and many of them will even respond!

Interacting With NPCs

You can interact with NPCs in much the same way as you can with any player. The main exception is that you cannot use the "tell" command with them. Instead, use commands such as "say", "sayto", "whisper", "lsay" etc.

You can also use soul commands to get a response out of NPCs. Of course, not all NPCs will *like* to be slapped, or flirted with... so be careful how you interact with them.

Finding NPCs

NPCs do not have any finger information, so therefore you cannot remotely know if they are currently loaded or not. To find an NPC, you can either use arcane methods (such as scrying), or you can show up in an NPC's usual hangout and see if they are about.

If an NPC is killed, it might take a little time until you see them around again.

Quests

Quests can often only be completed by communicating effectively with the NPCs involved. If an NPC asks you if you'd like to do something, it usually only requires a command similar to "say Yes, I'd like to!", or, "say No, I'd rather not, thanks!". In general, try chatting with the NPC as you would with a real player who looks like they might be in need of help.

Remember that politeness usually smooths communication, in Discworld as well as elsewhere. Therefore, be sure to mind your manners, when communicating with NPCs and players alike.
