Name
scope - Scopes out a place for shoplifting.
Syntax
scope <item>
scope security measures
Description
The scope command can be used either to assess how difficult it would be to shoplift an item, or to try and mitigate some of a shop's security measures that have come about as a result of other thieves stealing from the same location.
In each case, your skill in covert.casing.place will determine your overall success.
Scoping an item costs 20 covert gp and scoping a shop's security measures costs 35 covert gp.
Scoping an item
The syntax for scoping a particular item is simply:
scope <item>
This can be the name of the item, such as "scope short sword", or it can be the letter that corresponds to the item when listing the shop's inventory, such as "scope c".
The harder an item is to steal, the more difficult it is to accurately work out your chances of success.
Scoping security measures
The syntax for scoping out a shop's security measures is:
scope security measures
This version of the command lets you see if a particular shop has increased its security measures as a result of other thieves' recent shoplifting activity and will give you a chance to mitigate some of it so that it has less of an effect on your own shoplifting attempts.
You cannot scope out a shop's security measures if you have recently shoplifted from the location yourself, as you will be under too much scrutiny for it to be effective. You also cannot repeatedly scope the same shop's security measures within a certain timeframe; you can either mitigate the security measures or you can't.
Examples
> scope onyx earring
You study the specifics of the onyx earring thoughtfully, judging how best to acquire it without being seen.
You're confident that an onyx earring would be easy to steal.
> scope security measures
You look around at the layout and security measures of the shop, considering how best to proceed without arousing suspicion.
You assess the security of the store discreetly, managing to spot a couple of obvious flaws you can take advantage of when shoplifting.
