Earmuffs
Earmuffs are in-built devices that every player has. They allow you to block certain methods of communication, like tells, remotes, shouts and the newbie channel. Earmuffs provide an extra bit of privacy to those who don't like to be communicated with in all kinds of ways.
If you type "earmuff" you will see what kind of events you can earmuff. Note that you must set your earmuffs to the on position if you want to enable them. For example, if you want to earmuff the newbie channel, you will use two commands: "earmuff newbie", and then "earmuff on".
If you type "earmuff off", all earmuffed events are turned off at once. To unearmuff just one group of events, for example the newbie channel, just type "earmuff newbie" again.
On top of this you can "earmuff allowfriends" to still allow those who are on your friends list to break through your earmuffs.
Warning: communication with others is fairly important on Discworld; by earmuffing events you will likely miss a part of the game that could be fun or useful.
In general, it's therefore not a good idea to earmuff something when you don't know what it does!
Ignore
If you just want to block communication from a certain player, you can use the "ignore" command. The player will then be unable to send you tells, souls or remotes, and you won't see their chats on the talker.
The option to ignore someone is mainly intended to provide relief on harassment - it's not meant to block someone out of the game.
The unignore command will remove someone from your ignore list and ignore on its own will tell you who you are currently ignoring.
You can either ignore someone for a limited time, or until you unignore them again.
