Name

Playing with others - Putting the M and U in MUD!

Description

Any MUD is only as fun and exciting as the people that play it - hence it being a multi-user dungeon. To this end, you are encouraged to locate other players and play with them.

In the first instance, you may get to know people through various ways; you could meet them in your guild or the Mended Drum, have a conversation on the talker, walk past someone or be invited to their group.

But when you have some idea of who exists in this game, there are some commands to find out more about players that everyone has access to. The main ones to know and understand are the "who", "qwho", "finger", "refer", "friends" and "when" commands.

Let's go through them one by one, but note that for full information on each of these commands, they have their own help files!

Who / Qwho

The "who" and "qwho" command will show you who is online at any given time. You can use them without arguments (where "who" will show a long list with all the players, and "qwho" gives the same names using less space), but if you type a group after these commands, it will only show you players in that group.

As an example, "who newbie" shows you all players aged less than 18 hours who are currently online.

Finger

The "finger" command can be used to find out more information about a player that you might come across. Try fingering yourself to see what information can be seen in your own finger info. Your finger info is a way to tell people who the person behind the character is. You can have your real name and your location in there, if you so choose; type "chfn" to set this up.

Note that a valid email address is necessary if you ever forget your password on Discworld.

Finger information will also tell you if a certain character is a Creator or Playtester here on Discworld.

NPCs (Non-Player Characters) do not have finger information.

Refer

The refer command can be used to see if a certain person is online, and at the same time will show you their character's nationality (if they are logged in), description, the relationships they have set up with other players, as well as their player-killer status.

For an example, try "refer sugendran".

Friends

The friends command allows you to add certain characters as friends. By doing so, you can receive special notification messages when that character logs in to the MUD. You can also use the "who" or "qwho" commands to see which friends are online ("who friends").

The syntax to add friends is: friends add <player name> <description>. To remove them: friends remove <player name>. For example:

> friends add pinkfish Fluffy womble!
You add pinkfish with a tag of: Fluffy womble!

If you type "inform friend", you will be informed when friends log on and log off.

Type "help inform" for more examples of what events you can be informed of.

When

The "when" command shows you when a player last logged on. To use it, simply type "when <player name>". For example:

> when skye
Skye has been on for 2 minutes and 19 seconds.

> when pinkfish
Pinkfish last logged off 1 day, 5 hours, 25 minutes and 54 seconds ago.
