Clubs
As a new player, you might enjoy joining some of the many clubs on Discworld, especially, perhaps, the clubs devoted to the guild or specialty of your choice. After being recruited and obtaining a badge, you can chat and ask questions on the club channel (similar to talker channels). Clubs are an excellent way to get to know the other people playing Discworld.
A list of available clubs is available on Discworld's web pages. Also, if you hear of a club that looks right for you, you can type "refer clubname", where "clubname" is the name of the club you're interested in.
NOTE: Some clubs are secret or have requirements before you join. A club's refer info (that is, the information you see when you type "refer clubname"), if available, will list the names of the recruiters who can tell you more about their group and perhaps sign you up.
Clubs on Discworld MUD are similar to "clans" on other MUDs.
Families
Over time a friendship can grow to be somewhat more than a mere friendship. On Discworld MUD, you are able to further develop these bonds and can either join a family by having a relationship with someone who is already in the family, or by creating your own family.
Families give you a last name, but they give you no extra commands and no extra abilities.
